Adult Neurosurgery

Carl J. Sartorius, MD

Although born in Tennessee, Dr. Sartorius considers Indiana his home. He was raised in northern Indiana and received his undergraduate degree from Indiana University. He completed medical school and his neurosurgical residency at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He joined the Indianapolis Neurosurgical group, the predecessor of Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine, in 1990. His practice has always been based at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital.

His areas of expertise include surgical treatment of the cervical and lumbar spine as well as the surgical treatment of brain tumors particularly those requiring brain mapping. His treatment philosophy involves devotion to his patients and their families. His goal is to create a successful, personalized treatment program for the patient and compassionate care of the patient and family. He will pursue a cautious approach to surgical intervention.  As a former spine surgery patient himself, he has unique insight into what it’s like to be a patient undergoing spine surgery.

Dr. Sartorius has lectured nationally and internationally for many years on topics related to neurosurgery and has been voted Top Neurosurgeon by Indianapolis Monthly numerous times over his career. He was also the recipient of the prestigious Distinguished Physician Award by Ascension St. Vincent Health in recognition of his patient care and service to the hospital.

Although he is no longer engaged in full-time elective clinical practice, he continues to be very active within the group. He serves as the Clinical Director of Neurological Surgery for ProHealth Care in Wisconsin and Union Health in Terre Haute, Indiana, where he also provides neurosurgical outpatient clinical coverage.

He also is very involved in creating educational tools for different disciplines and mentoring the younger neurosurgeons in the group.

In his spare time, he loves spending time with his wife, family and two border terriers on their land in southern Indiana. He also enjoys exercise, reading history and working in the garden.

He and his team, look forward to meeting you!
